They were taking sides following a string of New Year's Eve sexual assaults blamed largely on foreigners. The anti-Muslim protesters held banners with slogans like "RAPEfugees not welcome" while the counter-protesters pushed the message, "Refugees welcome."
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he plans to celebrate the resurgent U.S. auto industry by visiting the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month. In his weekly radio and Internet address, the president says his much-criticized decision to bail out the industry was the right thing to do.
HANAHAN, S.C. (AP) — Police are looking into a fire at the home of the former South Carolina police officer accused in the shooting death of a black man last April. Local media outlets report the fire at the vacant home of Michael Slager was reported Friday evening. Slager is the former North Charleston police officer charged with murder in the shooting death of Walter Scott.
NEW YORK (AP) — Jon Stewart joined New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to honor a cancer-stricken Sept. 11 first responder who helped win a fight for health care. Stewart and ex-firefighter Ray Pfiefer spent weeks lobbying members of Congress to vote for the legislation that extends federal health monitoring and treatment for 9/11 first responders through 2090.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lottery fans, take heart. Officials say the odds are growing that someone will win the $900 million Powerball jackpot, which grew by $100 million just hours before tonight's drawing. If no one matches all the numbers, the next drawing is expected to soar to $1.3 billion.
