MEXICO CITY (AP) — After two previous prison escapes, some experts say Mexico will have little choice but to answer calls to extradite Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the United States, but that transfer is unlikely to happen quickly. Mexican marines recaptured the world's most notorious drug lord yesterday after a gun battle in which five suspects were killed and six others arrested. One marine was injured.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Record-breaking ticket sales have increased the odds that someone somewhere will win tonight's gigantic Powerball jackpot of $800 million before taxes. Lottery officials anticipate that about 65 percent of the possible number combinations will have been bought. If there's still no winner, the jackpot will soar past $1 billion. Even lottery officials say they don't know what to expect.
CAIRO (AP) — Two suspected militants have been shot after attacking three European tourists at an Egyptian Red Sea resort. One of the assailants was killed and the other wounded. Officials say the tourists were only lightly wounded. An Islamic State affiliate claimed an attack Thursday on a hotel in Cairo near the Pyramids that did not wound anyone. Egypt has been battling an insurgency based in the northern Sinai Peninsula that grew following the overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
ROWLAND HEIGHTS, Calif. (AP) — Three students from China who attend high school in Southern California face years in prison in a bullying attack on a classmate. The Los Angeles Times reports the trio will plead no contest to criminal charges that will remove the risk of their being sentenced to life in prison for torture. The classmate was allegedly stripped, kicked with high heels, slapped and burned with cigarettes.
BEIJING (AP) — As "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" begins its opening run in China, all eyes are expected to be on whether it can knock off "Avatar" as the world's all-time biggest grossing movie. It's the highest ever grossing film in the North American market but internationally, it still has a long way to go to beat "Avatar," and its $2.8 billion take. The international box office of the latest "Star Wars" movie stands at $1.6 billion.
