PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia's police commissioner says he's amazed that an officer wasn't killed by a gunman who fired about a dozen times at point-blank range at an officer sitting in a cruiser. The officer, who was wounded, got out of the car pursued the suspect and wounded him. Police say the man pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group. A local Muslim leader says no mosques contacted are familiar with the suspect.
HOUSTON (AP) — An Iraqi refugee living in California is being held without bail to face terrorism-related charges. A judge in Sacramento ruled that Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab of Sacramento is a public danger and might flee rather than return to court. Meanwhile, the family of a Houston man arrested on terror charges say they are shocked and have always felt that "ISIS is no good" and "ISIS is not Muslim."
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has taken to the air and Twitter to boast about the recapture of drug lord Joaquin "El Capo" Guzman. It's the third time Guzman has been jailed. He broke out of a maximum security prison six months ago, embarrassing the government and straining ties with the U.S. Today's capture was carried out by Mexican marines.
WASHINGTON (AP) — One major analyst says last month's jobs growth puts to rest worries that the U.S. economy will be undone by worries about China. Employers added 292,000 jobs in December, more than expected. The jobless rate remained at 5 percent.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Rock n' roll singer Troy Shondell has died. Shondell, whose real name was Gary Shelton, had a hit song in 1961 with "This Time (We're Really Breaking Up)." Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Shondell started singing and writing as a teenager. One of his earliest songs, "Kissin' at the Drive-In," became popular at drive-in movie theaters. He was 76.
