SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The father of a teenage girl who was hit and killed by a Utah driver on Halloween night has criticized the police investigation.
Unified police began investigating 14-year-old Victoria Hillman's death but stopped after learning that driver Veronica Rodriguez is the sister of a Unified officer.
West Valley City Police Department took over. Spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku says Rodriguez was cited Thursday for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Christopher Hillman, Victoria's father, says he is appalled that Rodriguez will only face $145 fine. He thinks police ignored some of the initial evidence that would have led to more serious charges.
Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell told the Deseret News that "absolutely no effort was ever made to cover anything up."
He says Rodriguez' brother was not on duty that evening.
