CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada prison officials say a 67-year-old inmate from Las Vegas died in prison in Carson City while serving a life sentence for child sexual assault and lewdness with a minor.

The Nevada Department of Corrections said Sherwood Gale Jordan was found dead about 5 a.m. Friday at the Northern Nevada Correction Center.

A cause and manner of death weren't immediately known, but court records show that Jordan had multiple strokes in 1998.

The Carson City sheriff's office coroner was scheduled to perform an autopsy.

Prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast says Jordan had been treated in the past at the prison medical center.

Records show that Jordan was tried and convicted in Las Vegas in 2004 of 40 felony charges, and lost appeals to have his conviction and sentence overturned.
