PHOENIX (AP) — A strike affecting about three-fifths of the Phoenix transit system's bus routes is underway.

A union representing drivers for one of the companies that operate the system for the city announced that drivers had rejected a contract offer by the company and begun a strike at midnight.

The strike halted bus service on 34 routes beginning at about 5 a.m. Service on 20 other routes operated by First Transit isn't affected. Neither is light rail service.

City Transit Department spokesman Lars Jacoby says the city hopes service can be resumed by Monday on two routes serving the stadium where the national college football championship game will be played that day.
