NEW YORK (AP) — A recovering drug addict who shared his story with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has been arrested on drug charges.
The Staten Island Advance (http://bit.ly/1Og9jlS ) says 22-year-old James Brenker was arrested Wednesday after police pulled over his car in Staten Island for having tinted windows.
Prosecutors say police found a hypodermic needle and heroin residue inside the car.
Brenker had battled drug addiction for years. He met with the mayor and his wife, Chirlane McCray, in December after accepting their invitation to share his story in an effort to help others fighting drug addiction. At the time Brenker had been drug free for several months.
Upon hearing of his arrest, McCray said recovery "is a complex process of life changes."
Brenker didn't return a call requesting comment.
