COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The mother of a South Carolina toddler who shot himself to death has been arrested.

Rock Hill police say in a news release that 29-year-old Patricia Carter turned herself in Thursday on a charge of unlawful neglect of a child.

In November, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said 3-year-old Savion Barrow died at a hospital after suffering a gunshot wound. Investigators say Carter left a loaded 9mm pistol on a bed where the boy was lying.

Police say Carter posted $15,000 bond and was released from jail. Reached by phone Friday, Carter hung up on a reporter asking if she had comment on the case or was represented by an attorney.

Rock Hill is about 70 miles north of Columbia.
