NEW YORK (AP) — China's economy, a major engine of global growth, is sputtering. China's main stock index plunged 7 percent Thursday before trading was automatically halted after just 30 minutes. The selling spread across continents, sending indexes sharply lower in the United States and Europe. The Dow tumbled nearly 400 points.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry is urging China to end "business as usual" with North Korea after the isolated nation conducted its fourth nuclear test. He spoke by phone with China's foreign minister today and told him that Beijing's approach to North Korea has failed. China is North Korea's main trading partner.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Supporters and opponents of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump are facing off tonight outside a Vermont theater where the billionaire developer invited thousands more people than could fit inside. Protesters gathered across the street exchanged chants with Trump supporters waiting to enter the venue in Burlington.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department will tighten safeguards against illegal surveillance of Muslims in secret investigations of terror threats. That's according to lawyers, who also say the NYPD will install a civilian representative on an advisory committee that reviews the probes. The moves are outlined in the terms of a settlement of two high-profile civil rights lawsuits.

HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — The attorney for the Texas state trooper charged with perjury in the arrest of Sandra Bland, who hanged herself in jail, says his client is appealing his termination. Larkin Eakin says Trooper Brian Encinia's termination is unwarranted. Encinia was indicted on a misdemeanor perjury charge for allegedly lying about the circumstances of his arrest of Bland.
