WASHINGTON (AP) — Robert Hatter scored 27 points and Desmond Fleming blocked a potential tying shot at the buzzer as Cornell hung on to defeat Howard 84-81 Wednesday night.
Hatter made 10 of 17 field goals, including two 3-pointers, for his fifth game this season with 25 points or more. Matt Morgan added 19 points and Darryl Smith 10 for the Big Red (7-7).
James Daniel III, the NCAA scoring leader (29.0 per game), had 22 points for the Bison (7-9), but shot 6-for-16 from the field. He also had six assists. Damon Collins added 17 points with 10 rebounds and Keon Hill scored 14 including four 3-pointers.
Howard, which has lost four starters to injury in recent weeks, made 7 of 10 3-pointers in the first half but trailed by seven with 45 seconds left. The Bison closed to 84-81 with 1.7 seconds left but Fleming blocked their last shot.
