ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Prosecutors in Anne Arundel County say an off-duty Baltimore police officer who shot and killed a man he said was trying to rob him acted in self-defense.
State's Attorney Wes Adams said in a news release Wednesday that Officer John Bilheimer acted in "an appropriate manner" when he shot and killed 32-year-old Edel Cato Moreland in Linthicum Heights on Dec. 19.
Anne Arundel County Police say Moreland confronted Bilheimer, pulled a gun and announced a robbery. Officers say Bilheimer, who was off-duty and not in uniform, shot Moreland with his service weapon. Moreland was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the weapon found at the scene was a realistic-looking toy gun.
