SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Koreans are celebrating at the news that their country has carried out its fourth nuclear test since 2006. Twenty-two-year-old university student Ri Sol Yong in Pyongyang says, the test "gives us more national pride." The White House says it can't confirm the test, but says it would be a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — The friend who bought the assault rifles used in the San Bernardino attack is scheduled to appear in a Riverside court Wednesday to answer to gun, immigration and terrorism-related charges. Enrique Marquez Jr. faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors say Marquez bought the guns that Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, used in the Dec. 2 massacre that killed 14 people and injured 22 others.
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Lawyers for three Muslim brothers convicted of plotting to kill U.S. military personnel will argue in court Wednesday that their clients were denied the right to testify and that their life sentences should be thrown out. The Albanian-born Duka brothers of Cherry Hill insist they wanted to take the stand at their 2008 trial, but were coerced by their then-defense lawyers to keep quiet. The brothers and two others were convicted of plotting an attack at Fort Dix, near Trenton, New Jersey, and elsewhere.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Elderly Filipino women raped by Japanese troops during World War II are asking for compensation from Japan after Tokyo pledged $8.3 million for South Korean women forced into Japanese military-run brothels during the war. The lawyers for the Filipino women say they're also considering filing cases with United Nations and holding Philippine President Benigno Aquino III liable for allegedly failing to support the case of the women against Japan.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The jackpot in Wednesday night's Powerball drawing is now an estimated $450 million. It would be the largest jackpot since a Powerball prize that climbed to $564.1 million last February before it was won by players from North Carolina, Texas and Puerto Rico.
