BOSTON (AP) — Charter school supporters are challenging Senate President Stan Rosenberg on the question of whether the people of his district support the schools.

Rosenberg told reporters Monday that gathering votes among the 40-member Senate for proposals to ease state caps on new charter schools is like trying to thread a needle.

The Amherst Democrat also said that people in his district don't want more charter schools.

The group Great Schools Massachusetts, which supports charter schools, disagrees.

The activists — citing statistics from the state education department — said there are 569 children on waiting lists for charter schools in Rosenberg's district with another 1,000 already enrolled.

Gov. Charlie Baker has proposed legislation that would allow the state to add up to a dozen new or expanded charters each year outside of the existing cap.
