PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The head of the Providence School Board plans to resign at the end of this month, citing interference from the city's mayor.
School Board President Keith Oliveira wrote a letter to Mayor Jorge Elorza on Tuesday saying he has a "fundamental disagreement" with the administration over the role of the board and its relation to Elorza's office.
Oliveira says the board should have "independent latitude" to make informed decisions that are "absent from political interference."
He told The Providence Journal that the mayor interfered with the budget process by telling the former school superintendent to submit a budget to the board without $8 million in new funding the board had recommended.
The mayor's spokesman says Elorza has accepted the resignation.
All school board members are appointed by the mayor.
