DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Qatari officials say the country's former ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has returned to the oil-and-gas-rich nation after breaking his leg.

A statement Tuesday from the Qatar Government Communications Office said Sheikh Hamad arrived the day before. It says he was welcomed back by his son, Sheikh Tamim, the current ruler of Qatar, and his family.

Authorities earlier said 64-year-old Sheikh Hamad had been flown to Switzerland after breaking a leg on holiday in December. They said he underwent surgery and physiotherapy while there.

The government has declined to say how or where Sheikh Hamad broke his leg.

Sheikh Hamad is believed to have been in poor health for years. He ruled Qatar from 1995 until handing over power to his son in 2013.
