HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — Quinnipiac University officials say the school will move forward with plans to build two new athletic fields without lights after the latest denial issued by Hamden's land use boards.
The New Haven Register reports (http://bit.ly/1Z2MLdt ) the town's Zoning Board of Appeals denied Quinnipiac's application for a variance in October for the Mount Carmel Avenue fields because they will be located in a zone that prohibits sports lighting.
The fields are being built as part of a court order issued three years ago that found that the university wasn't in compliance with federal Title IX regulations. Title IX requires equal athletic opportunities for both genders.
The Zoning Board says the school can "meet the spirit of the court order" without the lights.
Quinnipiac has until 2018 to build the fields.
