WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is trying to make more gun sales subject to background checks. The president today will unveil a more sweeping definition of gun dealers, to include people at gun shows, websites and flea markets. Those sellers often skirt the background check requirement by not registering as a licensed dealer.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials have issued flash flood watches as a strong storm is expected to hit Northern California. El Nino storms lined up over the Pacific started soaking California with light rain Monday but forecasters say a series of stronger systems are expected to arrive starting today. As much as 15 inches of rain could fall in the next 16 days in Northern California, with about 2 feet of snow expected in the highest points of the Sierra Nevada.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's president says that Saudi Arabia cannot "cover up" its crime of executing a leading Shiite cleric by severing diplomatic relations with Tehran. President Hassan Rouhani's comments come as Kuwait says it has recalled its ambassador to Iran following attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran. Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and 46 others were convicted of terror charges and executed.

PARIS (AP) — French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') is honoring 17 victims killed in Islamic extremist attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, a kosher market and police a year ago this week. Plaques have been unveiled around Paris, marking the violence. Today's ceremonies come as Charlie Hebdo is releasing a special anniversary issue laced with obscene and offensive cartoons that lampoon everyone from Muslim fundamentalists to children, politicians and Catholic priests.

BERLIN (AP) — City officials and police in Cologne, Germany are holding a crisis meeting following a series of sex assaults on New Year's Eve. Police say dozens of women have reported being sexually assaulted and robbed. At least 60 criminal complaints have been filed, including one allegation of rape.
