WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Loretta Lynch says she's comfortable that President Barack Obama has the legal authority to expand background checks for would-be gun owners. Obama is taking executive action to beef up enforcement to cover more guns sold at gun shows, online and elsewhere. Gun control advocates say background checks are being skirted. Critics say the president is engaging in an unconstitutional overreach.
BURNS, Ore. (AP) — Federal authorities appear to be in no rush to end an armed takeover of an Oregon wildlife preserve by a group of anti-government activists. The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is in a wilderness area about 300 miles east of Portland. It was seized over the weekend, in part for the conviction of two ranchers authorities say set fires on public land.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Officials say the former police officer charged with murder in the death of an unarmed driver running from a traffic stop has been released from a South Carolina jail. A judge granted Michael Slager a $500,000 surety bond. The former North Charleston police officer is shown on cellphone video firing eight times as Walter Scott ran from a traffic stop last April.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — More than 3,000 people have gathered at a memorial ceremony for San Bernardino County employees to mourn the 14 people killed in last month's terror attack. Speakers at the event included evangelical pastor and author Rick Warren.
NEW YORK (AP) — Homeless advocates are questioning an order by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo requiring the forcible removal of the homeless from streets during freezing conditions. New York City officials say they may not comply. The head of a coalition for the homeless says aggressive removal will push people on the street further away from the services they need.
