SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah defensive coordinator John Pease has announced he is retiring.

The university says assistant coach Morgan Scalley has been promoted to defensive coordinator to replace him.

Pease, 72, came out of retirement and returned to the program before the 2015 season. The Utes were in the top three in the Pac-12 in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense and pass efficiency defense.

He also was on the Utah staff from 2009-10 and spent several years coaching in the NFL.

Scalley has been the safeties coach and special teams coordinator. He's been the recruiting coordinator the last seven seasons.

Scalley was named Mountain West Conference co-Defensive Player of the Year as a Utah safety in 2004. He became a member of the coaching staff in 2006.

A new coordinator for recruiting and special teams will be named.
