WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says his administration's recommendations for gun control executive actions are within his legal authority and consistent with the Second Amendment. Obama spoke in the Oval Office following a meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch, FBI Director James Comey and other top law enforcement officials. The officials presented the president with options for gun control measures he can take without congressional approval.

BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A spokesman for the armed group occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon says it wants authorities to look into claims that local ranchers have been intimidated by the federal government. Ammon Bundy is one of the sons of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was involved in a 2014 standoff with the government over grazing rights. He told reporters today that two local ranchers who face long prison sentences for setting fire to land have been treated unfairly.

SEATTLE (AP) — Longtime Democratic Congressman Jim McDermott of Washington state is retiring. He announced today that he won't seek a 15th term. The 78-year-old is a former Navy psychiatrist known for his liberal views and criticism of the Iraq war. One of the few physicians in Congress, McDermott also has focused on health care issues and implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Inmates from the Illinois Department of Corrections have been helping fill sandbags along rivers in the state as floodwaters rise. Officials say the National Weather Service is reporting that water levels are decreasing on the Mississippi and Sangamon rivers. Meanwhile, waters are expected to rise on the Illinois River south of Peoria and on some locations along the Wabash River in southeastern Illinois. A sandbag wall remains in place in Peoria. Flooding in recent weeks has killed nine people in Illinois.

EAST TROY, Wis. (AP) — Divers are fighting frigid water as they search for two men who went missing at a southern Wisconsin lake, after the bodies of two of their friends were pulled from the water. Authorities in East Troy say the four men from Illinois were staying at a house on Mill Lake. Friends told investigators the men went outside to smoke around 2:30 a.m. yesterday. The friends discovered the four were missing around 9 a.m. They found footprints in the snow to the boathouse and a canoe overturned in the lake. Two bodies were found yesterday.
