GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupted in dramatic fashion, spewing incandescent material and sending columns of ash up to 23,000 feet (7,000 meters) above sea level.
No evacuations were ordered due to Sunday night's volcanic activity. But officials urged nearby communities to remain vigilant.
The country's volcanology agency said the mountain produced "constant sounds similar to a train locomotive and strong explosions" that rattled roofs and windows up to 18 miles (30 kilometers) away.
National disaster response spokesman David de Leon said Monday that particulate matter had fallen on at least eight nearby towns.
The Volcano of Fire stands 12,300 feet (3,763 meters) above sea level in south-central Guatemala. It erupted 13 times last year.
