SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former Utah lawmaker Jackie Biskupski is being sworn in today as the mayor of Salt Lake City, becoming the first openly gay person to hold the office. The 49-year-old defeated two-term incumbent mayor Ralph Becker in November by winning 52 percent of the vote.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A search and rescue team has saved a disoriented man who lost one of his snowshoes while hiking in Layton. The Davis County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team says they used a helicopter to get a 24-year-old man who fell 100 feet to the bottom of a ravine and called his family in Texas for help. The family called Utah emergency workers, who used the GPS unit on the man's phone to find him.

OREM, Utah (AP) — Orem police say the mother of two teenage girls caught in an ongoing custody dispute had been hiding her daughters for more than year. The Daily Herald in Provo reports that police in Pleasant Grove, acting on a tip, found 16-year-old Sydney and 15-year-old Danielle Wolferts. The teens were released to their father, Brian Wolferts.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The number of Utah police confrontations that ended in a suspect's death dropped in 2015, but the killings continue to raise concern about the use of lethal force. The Deseret News reports a total of 10 men between the ages of 24 and 53 were killed in encounters with police in 2015. All 10 deaths were found legally justified by prosecutors. In 2014, officers shot and killed 14 men. A police official says it's been a year since Utah stepped up de-escalation and scenario-based, use-of-force training.
