MONTAFON, Austria (AP) — Alessandro Haemmerle defeated Markus Schairer for an Austrian 1-2 finish in the season-opening World Cup snowboard cross on Saturday.

It was Haemmerle's second World Cup victory after also winning the Olympic test event in Sochi in 2013.

The Austrian pair finished the final ahead of Russian Olympic silver medalist Nikolay Olyunin and Cameron Bolton of Australia.

Bolton led the race until making a mistake on the final jump before the finish.

Defending World Cup champion Nelly Moenne Loccoz of France won the women's competition.

Moenne Loccoz beat four-time world champion Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States in the final.

Mariya Vasiltsova of Russia came third and Zoe Bergermann of Canada placed fourth.

A team event is scheduled for Sunday.
