WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress has sent President Barack Obama a short-term spending bill to keep the government open through next Wednesday. The stopgap measure comes as lawmakers and the White House rush to finalize a $1.1 trillion government-wide spending bill and a sprawling tax package. The short-term bill will give Congress and the administration more time to complete negotiations.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Evidence obtained by The Associated Press finds that four of the nine people killed in a melee between biker gangs in Waco, Texas, last May were hit with bullets from the type of rifle used by police. The .223-caliber rifles were the only type of weapon fired by police that day; it's not clear whether any of the bikers had identical rifles.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A victim of an Oklahoma City police officer convicted of rape and sexually battery says he "picked the wrong lady to stop that night." Jannie Ligons (JAY'-nee LIHG'-uns) complained to the police and a local TV station, triggering an investigation that led to charges that Daniel Holtzclaw had assaulted 13 women. He was convicted of charges involving eight of the women. The jury recommended sentences totaling more than 200 years.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The defense has rested in the manslaughter trial of a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray, who died of a broken neck suffered while in police custody. Lawyers for Officer William Porter called 12 witnesses over three days, including the defendant. Prosecutors say Porter was negligent for failing to call a medic and failing to buckle Gray in a transport van.
NEW YORK (AP) — Willard Scott is retiring. The 81-year-old television weatherman has been a fixture on NBC's "Today" show for 35 years. In recent years he's appeared on the morning show once or twice a week to mark the birthdays of viewers 100 years old and over. The show plans a tribute to Scott on Tuesday.
