ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The latest on the Albuquerque police union leader who is facing a child abuse charge (all times local):
A spokeswoman for the Albuquerque police union says its president has been placed on leave amid allegations she abused a teenage relative.
Albuquerque Police Officers Association spokeswoman Toni Balzano says union Vice President Shaun Willoughby will conduct business as interim president, and that no final board decision has been made regarding APOA President Stephanie Lopez's status with the union.
Lopez, who is an Albuquerque police officer, was arrested Thursday evening on charges of child abuse and bribery or intimidation of a witness.
Police turned over the investigation to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department to avoid any conflicts of interest.
A criminal complaint states that Lopez hit and struck the teenager.
Authorities say Lopez's arrest came after the teen reported the abuse to school officials, who notified police and the state Children, Youth and Families Department.
The leader of the police union in New Mexico's largest city is facing child abuse and bribery charges after authorities say she repeatedly beat her teenage daughter.
Authorities say Albuquerque Police Officers Association President Stephanie Lopez was arrested Thursday following allegations she hit her daughter in the face and head.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department says the 40-year-old Lopez was booked into jail, where she was ordered held on a $5,000 bond.
A complaint says the daughter complained to school officials, who contacted authorities.
The department says the arrest came after the Albuquerque police asked the sheriff's office on Wednesday to investigate the allegations. It also comes as an independent monitor is overseeing reforms to Albuquerque police.
Lopez did not immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press.
It's unclear if she had an attorney.
