CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Protesters at a meeting of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors meeting are speaking out against the appointment of the system's new president.
WRAL-TV reported (http://bit.ly/1jT4ZAd ) about a half dozen people protesting the appointment of Margaret Spellings were escorted from the meeting Friday in Chapel Hill. The station reported that protesters wearing orange T-shirts loudly identified themselves and said, "Spellings must go."
About 50 people who hoped to be heard remained outside the meeting.
Friday was also the last meeting for outgoing system President Tom Ross, who steps down Jan. 3. University system spokeswoman Joni Worthington says someone yet to be named will do the job until former U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings takes over in March.
Ross headed the state's 16 university campuses for four years.
