MIAMI (AP) — The University of Miami's Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute has received a $25 million donation from the Soffer Family Foundation.
The funding will help the institute explore new cell-based therapies in cardiology, sports medicine, and aging-related frailty.
The institute has published clinical trials that have shown the efficacy of stem cells in regenerating cardiac tissue. The institute is also expanding its research into developing stem cell treatments for infants with congenital heart disease.
A portion of the gift will also support sports medicine stem cell research at a time when an increasing number of professional athletes are looking to regenerative medicine to treat injuries.
The institute said in a statement Thursday that the donation from the Soffer family, founders of Turnberry Associates and owners of The Fontainebleau Resorts, was the largest donation to date.
