COVINA, Calif. (AP) — A funeral will be held Thursday for a victim of last week's mass shooting at a holiday luncheon for San Bernardino, California employees. The funeral for Yvette Velasco is the first to be held for one of the victims. She was a county environmental health specialist, and family and friends plan to gather for an outdoor funeral service in the afternoon. Velasco was one of 14 people killed when authorities say co-worker Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik stormed the gathering Dec. 2, and opened fire.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge in Texas has cleared the way for the last of 21 Syrian refugees to resettle in Houston Thursday. U.S. District Judge David Godbey on Wednesday knocked Texas for offering "largely speculative hearsay" about extremists possibly infiltrating Syrian refugees trying to resettle in the state. The first dozen refugees arrived earlier this week. Texas is the only state that has taken the U.S. government to court in an effort to block resettlements.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The man accused of killing three people at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic says he's a "warrior for the babies," is guilty and won't go to trial. Robert Lewis Dear stunned people in the courtroom Wednesday when he made the declaration. The 57-year-old was formally charged in a Colorado Springs court with 179 counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and other crimes.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan says its forces have repelled a Taliban attack on the Kandahar airport that lasted more than 24 hours and killed 50 people, mainly civilians. The Defense Ministry says the dead are 38 civilians, 10 Afghan soldiers and two police. Officials say the 11 "terrorists" who carried out the assault were killed. Afghan forces have struggled to roll back Taliban advances since the U.S. and NATO formally ended their combat mission at the end of last year.
SHANGHAI (AP) — An Associated Press investigation has found that Chinese companies hired by Western brands to fight counterfeiting are themselves plagued with fraud. Some agents have been producing the very fakes they were paid to stop. Some cases involved potentially dangerous products, such as counterfeit auto parts, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and electrical components.
