Singer to speak at North Alabama commencement

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — The lead singer of the rock band Drive-By Truckers is coming home to serve as the commencement speaker at the University of North Alabama.

Patterson Hood will address graduates in his native Florence on Saturday.

Hood once attended North Alabama but moved to Athens, Georgia, to pursue his music career. Since then, Drive-By Truckers has released a dozen albums and Hood has become known as a prolific writer and performer.

Aside from musical works including "Southern Rock Opera," Hood has written for publications including The New York Times Magazine and Oxford American. He has spoken or held classes on college campuses including Princeton University.

Hood now lives in Oregon. His father David Hood plays bass for the renowned Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.
