LONDON (AP) — There were two first-time winners of The Associated Press Global Football 10 on Tuesday, after a week of shock results.
Borussia Moenchengladbach topped the team vote after its 3-1 victory against Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga, while Algeria international Riyad Mahrez led the way in the player vote after his hat trick for Leicester in the 3-0 win against Swansea.
Moenchengladbach inflicted the first defeat of the season upon Bayern in the German league, scoring three times in 12 minutes in the second half in an impressive win.
"Borussia Moenchengladbach deserve immense recognition for their win over German Bundesliga juggernaut Bayern Munich," Jonathan Johnson of beIN Sports USA said. "Andre Schubert's men did not just beat Bayern, they comprehensively dismantled them and fully deserved their 3-1 win over Pep Guardiola's side."
Leicester was second in the team vote after its 3-0 win at home against Swansea continued its impressive form in the Premier League this season and moved it top of the English standings, replacing Manchester City.
City was surprisingly beaten 2-0 by Stoke on Saturday, and Stoke was third in the vote due to the result.
Bologna entered the poll for the first time this season in fourth, after beating Serie A leader Napoli 3-2 on Sunday.
Juventus beat Lazio 2-0 in the Italian league on Friday and is fifth. Paris Saint-Germain, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund, Bournemouth and Newcastle round out the top 10 teams.
Mahrez led the player vote after his treble took Leicester to first in the Premier League and his goal tally for the season to 11.
"It seems only fitting to recognize a Leicester player as they sit atop the Premier League," Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in the United States said. "I really expected that player to be Jamie Vardy rather than Riyad Mahrez, but his hat trick was one of the top performances of the week."
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is runner-up after scoring twice in 16 minutes to lead his team to an emphatic 4-1 win against Getafe in the Spanish league.
Marko Arnautovic is third, as his two goals propelled Stoke to victory against City and his teammate Xherdan Shaqiri, who assisted both strikes, is fourth.
The Stoke duo also enter the poll for the first time this season, along with Mattia Destro, who scored twice in Bologna's win over Napoli.
Antonio Sanabria, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo complete the top 10 players of the week.
