2. "Freakonomics," by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. (Morrow, $25.95.) A maverick scholar and a journalist apply economic theory to everything from cheating sumo wrestlers to legalized abortion and falling crime rate.

1. "1776," by David McCullough (Simon & Schuster, $18). An account of America's founding year focusing on the inexperienced George Washington and the heroic citizen soldiers.

2. "An Inconvenient Truth," by Al Gore (Rodale, $21.95). The former vice president sounds an alarm about global warming in this companion volume to the movie of the same title.

3. "Night," by Elie Wiesel (Hill & Wang, $9). A new translation of an account of the horrors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, first published in English in 1960.

4. "In Cold Blood," by Truman Capote (Vintage, $14). A savage murder in Kansas in 1959 and its consequences.

5. "Running With Scissors," by Augusten Burroughs (Picador, $14). In the 1970s, a young boy lives with a crazy psychiatrist in a squalid household.
