SALT LAKE CITY — A couple was charged Friday with operating an extensive burglary ring, including a theft from the set of a local TV show.
Reiel Johnson Dorsey, 25, was charged in 3rd District Court with 27 felonies including multiple counts of burglary, theft and unlawful acquisition of a bank card. Those charges come on the heels of being charged in October with seven more felonies, including theft and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, and eight other charges in August, mostly theft and drug-related.
Michael Bailey was charged Thursday with nine counts of burglary, theft and theft by deception and is listed as a co-defendant with Dorsey in the other cases.
On Oct. 5, Draper police officers arranged to meet Dorsey who was selling a china set on KSL.com. When Dorsey arrived at the designated meeting location, in a stolen car, she attempted to get back into the car and drive off when she saw police officers waiting, according to charging documents.
An officer had to "physically remove" Dorsey from the vehicle, the charges state.
The china set was believed to have been stolen from the set of the TV show "Granite Flats" that was being filmed at Granite High School, according to the charges. Inside the stolen vehicle, detectives said they found bank cards, Social Security cards and checks from multiple victims.
Prosecutors allege that Dorsey and Bailey obtained these items from multiple locations, including residential burglaries and mail thefts. While searching a storage unit 4317 S. 300 West, police found multiple packages that had been stolen from residents, according to the charges.
In one residential burglary, more than $13,000 in property — including jewelry, bows, shotguns, rifles, cameras, a TV, a laptop and a video game system — were stolen, the charges state. In another burglary, nearly $38,000 worth of property was taken from a house, more than $6,500 in a third residential burglary, nearly $14,000 from a fourth, and $19,000 from a fifth.
Court records list a total of more than $107,000 worth of property taken in at last nine residential burglaries, including Go Pro cameras, jewelry, laptops, luggage, passports, Social Security cards, iPhones and other electronic devices.
