An abandoned warehouse fire took a toll on overheated firefighters this afternoon, and fighting the fire caused a headache for drivers heading into downtown Salt Lake. One of the main routes in and out of Salt Lake City was cut off.
The fire started at 439 West and 600 South just after 3 p.m. in a vacant warehouse. Fire crews contained the blaze quickly, but due to the heat, three alarms were called out to help rotate firefighters and keep them hydrated.
"The fact that the heat is so hot today, we need more resources on the scene so we don't lose any people from heat exhaustion," said Salt Lake City Fire Chief Dennis McKone.
Fire crews closed the 600 South off-ramp from I-15 for more than an hour as they battled the blaze. It was reopened shortly before 5 p.m.
McKone says the fire was apparently started by men doing some welding inside the building. No one was injured in the fire.
