It has been two weeks since a Lehi police officer was shot and critically injured during a traffic stop. A motorist was killed after she pulled a gun on the officer and fired two shots.
It's been a tough couple of weeks for members of the Lehi Police Department. Capt. Harold Terry remains in the hospital, but his colleagues are hoping he will fully recover and eventual return to work.
As Capt. Terry pulled over a car on June 23, the woman inside fired two shots at him. He fired back once, striking the suspect's car, while two backup officers shot and killed the woman, Kelly Wark.
Capt. Terry was struck in the head by the gunfire and flown to Utah Valley Hospital, where he is still recovering.
Lt. Darren Paul of the Lehi Police Department said, "He continues to improve, and we're encouraged by that. He is working with doctors and therapists and has a lot of family support and a lot of community support."
That community support includes photos of Capt. Terry, which have become visible all around town, and a banner placed along Lehi's Main Street.
Lt. Paul explained, "We're a tight-knit group, and he is one of our leaders. We've had to adjust our work schedules and pick up a little slack until he's ready to come back."
Capt. Terry had surgery immediately after arriving at the hospital on June 23. His fellow officers are optimistic about his recovery as he has therapy and more time to heal.
"We're encouraged by what we're hearing from the doctors and continue to add our thoughts and prayers to his recovery," Lt. Paul said.
The investigation into the shooting isn't finished. Our calls to investigators today were not returned.
A fundraiser for Capt. Terry will be held this Friday at the Lehi Legacy Center at 123 N. Center St. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information contact Brittney Bird at 471-4678. Also, monetary donations may be made to benefit Capt. Terry at any branch of Central Bank.
