Police agencies suddenly find themselves with soaring costs for gas that they did not budget for last year.

Layton and Weber County are exploring hybrid vehicles. Ogden already has four of those and a goal to cut fuel consumption by 10 percent next year.

The Box Elder County sheriff put in a policy that calls for no-idling unless absolutely necessary.
