(KSL News) Two World War II Navy veterans from Utah received medals today for heroism more than 63 years ago.
Robert Strong of Helper and George Plant of Murray were both serving on the U.S.S. Chenango in April of 1945 when a plane crashed onto the carrier's deck. In spite of live ammunition and ordnance in the midst of the fire, they bravely attacked the flames and threw the bombs overboard.
Congressman Jim Matheson presented Strong with a Purple Heart and a Navy and Marine Corp Medal. And Plant received a Navy and Marine Corp Medal.
