(KSL News) With the 4th of July coming up, the public land agencies want people to celebrate with fire safety.
According to Department of Natural Resources, 90 percent of the fires in Utah last year were human-caused. The few major fires Utah's had so far this year also have been human-caused.
Fireworks and campfires are common causes of wildfires, and the state government wants to encourage people to be aware of that fact during the holidays.
Gov. Jon Huntsman said, "Typically, in the summer months, people just aren't on high alert. And all we ask as a state, particularly with the 4th and 24th right around the corner, is to be on high alert."
Fire agencies say to use only legal fireworks in safe, wide-open areas. The Forest Service suggests using extra caution when putting out campfires if you're camping this weekend.
