SALT LAKE CITY — Most veterans returning from World War II never received any sort of gratitude or welcome home when they came back to Utah 70 years ago. Late Saturday night, things were a little different.
The State Capitol was packed with friends, family and signs as veterans from the Utah Honor Flight made a big entrance after taking a free trip to Washington, D.C. to see their memorials. The Capitol was the obvious place for this celebration, because this trip was sponsored by members of the Utah House of Representatives, who donated more than $35,000 out of their own pockets to make the trip possible.
The veterans said their three-day journey was beyond anything they could have imagined.
"Oh, I think it's the most wonderful thing I've ever had happen to me!" said WWII Navy veteran Marjorie Campbell. "Perfect. Perfect day. The organizers, Utah legislature, KSL, everybody, it has been wonderful."
