Porter Gustin (Salem Hills High School)**USC**
Gustin had a solid debut for the Trojans last Saturday finishing with three tackles. The freshman outside linebacker will continue competing for playing time this season. He is expected to see an increased role this week against Idaho.
Gustin said of his debut, "I wasn't playing physical enough," he told the Los Angeles Times. "I worked on that, and it will be changed by Saturday."
Linebackers coach Peter Sirmon is excited about the effort Gustin brings to the team. "He plays with great effort," Sirmon said. "We should all expect significant improvement every week he takes the field because of how he prepares."
Osa Masina (Brighton High School)
USC
Masina had a collegiate debut to remember, finishing with four tackles, including a 46 fumble return for a touchdown.
In a video posted to the USC YouTube account, Masina said, "I was just tracking down the ball, and I saw it laying on the ground. I knew it was a backwards pass, and I was wondering why no one was picking it up. I just scooped it up and took over from there."
Masina is expected to see more playing time as the season progresses and should have a larger role this week when the Trojans face the Idaho Vandals.
Cooper Bateman (Cottonwood High School)
Alabama
Bateman saw limited action completing 7 of 8 passes 51 yards in the game against Wisconsin.
Bateman was listed as one of starting quarterbacks for the Crimson Tide going into week one, although Jake Coker ended up getting the start. Bateman spent most of the offseason improving his accuracy and arm strength.
Alabama coach Nick Saban told AL.com, "His completion percentage has been very, very good relative to the other guys, and he is very athletic and can run. We like a quarterback to be like that."
Dalton Shultz (Bingham High School)
Stanford
Shultz had one catch 6 yards in a 16-6 loss at Northwestern, but he is expected to be a focal point in the Stanford offense this season and for seasons to come.
Coach David Shaw told the San Francisco Chronicle that "Dalton is going to play a lot of football for a long time," Shaw said. "He's potentially a special football player. Right now, he and Austin Hooper are a phenomenal one-two punch. Who's one and who's two depends on the play."
Shultz looks to help Stanford get back on track this Saturday as they take on the Central Florida Knights at home.
Alex Kuresa (Logan High School, BYU, Snow College)
Portland State
The former BYU Cougar lead the Portland State Vikings to an upset victory against the Washington State Cougars last Saturday in Pullman. Kuresa finished the game completing seven of 12 passes for 61 yards. He led all rusher with 92 yards on 16 carries. Many say the victory was one of the biggest upsets of the decade.
Kuresa and the Vikings travel south to face the Idaho State Bengals.
