The tragedy of a suicide is not only the loss of life, but also the missed opportunity to help. In most suicide situations at least one attempt was made to reach out for help and struggling person's words or subtle signs are frequently missed, dismissed or avoided. Utah ranks in the top ten for age-adjusted suicides, fifth for youth suicides in the nation, and is the seventh-leading cause of death for ages ten and older. - American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

KSL is breaking the silence on suicide by addressing ways people can get help for themselves or someone they know that is having suicidal thoughts. One of the ways a person can seek help is through the valley CORE program. Brian Nielson, a certified peer support specialist, talks about his experience and involvement in the program.

About the valley CORE program: The Co-occurring Reentry and Empowerment (CORE) Unit offers services to adult male or female criminal offenders suffering from co-occurring disorders including substance abuse and mental health. The 16 bed facilities have been designed to provide wrap around services both onsite and in the community, integrating mental health and substance abuse treatment approaches with the ultimate goal of successful reentry and reduction in recidivism. This will be accomplished by empowering consumers, promoting abstinence from substance abuse, improving positive emotional functioning and promoting accountability.
