ATLANTA (AP) — Two brothers accused of attacking their parents in what police say was a plot to kill them waived their first appearance in court Friday.
Cameron Ervin, 17, and Christopher Ervin, 22, face aggravated assault and arson charges, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The case will be sent to superior court and presented to a grand jury, the newspaper said.
Christopher Ervin's attorney, Tom Clegg, said his client waived the hearing because of the extensive news media coverage. Clegg said he does not expect to seek bond for his client.
"I hate to waive preliminary hearings because they are a golden opportunity to find out things about the case at the earliest possible time," Clegg said. "The reason I'm waiving is because of the media interest in this case."
Yvonne Ervin told police her two sons drugged and attacked her and her husband in their suburban Atlanta home on Sept. 5. She and her husband, Zachary, were hospitalized but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said the brothers also turned on the gas to the fireplace and lit a candle in a failed attempt to blow up the house, which led to the arson charges.
Both parents have been released from the hospital.
