DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in have released the name of the gunman who was killed by a SWAT team after leading police in California on lengthy car chase, running into a crowded restaurant and seizing at least four hostages.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner's office identified the man Friday as 41-year-old Eddie Tapia.
The SWAT team fatally shot Tapia after entering the restaurant from the front and back.
Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez says at least four people were being held against their will inside Chris' & Pitt's barbecue restaurant in Downey.
Hernandez says Tapia didn't fire on them.
Dozens of customers and workers had poured out of the restaurant about an hour earlier when Tapia ran inside. He had just led police on a long car chase and fired shots into the air before entering the restaurant.
