Williams needs just a win this evening and then one in the final to become the first person to win all four majors in one year since Steffi Graf in 1988. Tonight's other semi has second seed Simona Halep (HAL'-ehp) going against No. 26 Flavia Pannetta.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The New York Mets traveled to Washington earlier this week with one thing in mind: to sweep the Nationals and bury them deeper in the standings. Mission accomplished. The Mets now top the Nats by seven games in the National League East after last night's 5-3 win.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Despite the fact they have the worst record in the American League, the Athletics have given manager Bob Melvin a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2018 season. He has guided the A's to three playoff appearances and a 385-338 record in his tenure as the club's bench boss.
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — The first round of the LPGA's Evian Championship is under way in France. The early clubhouse leader is Lexi Thompson after an opening-round 5-under 66. This is fifth and final major of the season in women's golf.
