SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Supreme Court will allow an immigrant to withdraw from a plea deal that should have wiped his record clean but instead left him at risk of deportation. A lawyer for Sergio Meza says the high court opinion will remedy a legal complication that affects thousands of Utah immigrants. While state courts can dismiss minor charges against reformed low-level offenders, those charges can still come up during federal immigration proceedings.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A legal rights group says Utah is violating the constitutional rights of criminal defendants who are not competent to stand trial by leaving them waiting in jail for months before they can be treated and ready to face their charges. The Salt Lake City-based Disability Law Center filed a class-action lawsuit against Utah's Department of Human Services, which oversees both the state mental health division and state hospital. A Department of Human Services spokeswoman says the Utah attorney general's office is reviewing the lawsuit.
DRAPER, Utah (AP) — A missing hiker has been found dead in the mountains east of Draper. Unified Police say 43-year-old Kerry Crowley was found at the bottom of a cliff near the Cirque of Lone Peak. Investigators believe Crowley fell 200-300 feet to her death.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An Orem man serving as a Mormon mission president in Mexico was shot during an armed robbery this week. A church spokesman says Lynn Madsen's legs were both injured after he was struck by one gunshot while at a restaurant in Juchitán, Mexico. Madsen is expected to recover.
