WASHINGTON (AP) — The Mets have won the first two games of their key series in Washington with the Nationals. That puts the New Yorkers on top of the Nats by six games in the National League East. They'll complete the series tonight with Stephen Strasburg going to the mound for the Nationals against Jacob deGrom.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul of the Giants has gone home because he is not ready to play. Coach Tom Coughlin (KAWF'-lihn) says the team examined the right hand that Pierre-Paul injured in a fireworks accident during the July Fourth holiday and feels he isn't prepared to play.

TORONTO (AP) — The details have been worked out to clear the way for players from the NHL to play in next year's World Cup of Hockey in Toronto. Now the officials who made that decision have to agree on a way to clear the players for an appearance in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The eight-team World Cup of Hockey, which will be held in Toronto, has not been played since 2004.

NEW YORK (AP) — Flavia Pennetta (FLAH'-vee-uh pehn-EHT'-uh) has advanced to the semifinals at the U.S. Open. The 26th seed defeated fifth-seed Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. This evening's Roger Federer-Richard Gasquet (ree-SHARD' gas-KAY') match has been pushed up to 7 p.m. New York time because of the forecast of rain.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — The PGA of America has awarded the 2023 PGA Championship to Oak Hill in Pittsford, New York. This will mark the fourth time the club has held the event and first time since Jason Dufner won two years ago. Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the only other course to host the event four times.
