WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry plans to focus on the global migrant issue today when he holds separate meetings with the House and Senate Judiciary committees. The U.S. vows to help its European allies with the escalating migrant crisis and Kerry will use the closed-door meetings to brief lawmakers on how many more Syrian refugees the administration is willing to take in.
UNDATED (AP) — European Union Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker (zhahn-KLOHD' YUN'-kur) says it's time to make the effort to help the latest wave of migrants mandatory. He says 22 of the member states should be forced to accept another 120,000 people in need of international protection who have come toward the continent at high risk through Greece, Italy and Hungary. Juncker wants his plan and another endorsed on Monday at a meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels.
HONG KONG (AP) — Asian stock markets in general got a big boost today from Japan's main index, which posted its biggest gain in nearly seven years. Japan's Nikkei 225 index vaulted 7.7 percent to 18,770.51, its biggest one-day rise since October 2008, as Asian officials sought to counter pessimism about prospects for markets and economic growth.
SEATTLE (AP) — Thousands of Seattle schoolkids are starting the school year with a day off thanks to a teachers' strike. Both sides remain far apart on key issues, including pay raises, teacher evaluations and the length of the school day. The district earlier offered an increase of nearly 9 percent over three years. The union countered with a 10.5 percent increase over two years.
NEW DELHI (AP) — The Islamic State group is drawing official condemnation today from India's Muslims. More than 1,000 Muslim clerics in India have ratified a religious ruling, or fatwa, calling the extremist group's actions "un-Islamic" and against the basic tenets of Islam. One leader says IS actions are "inhuman."
