CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Cromwell High School's football coach has been suspended for a week after a report of hazing in the team's locker room.
School superintendent Paula Talty announced the suspension Tuesday and said coach Chris Eckert would miss the Cromwell-Portland co-op team's opening game Saturday against Coginchaug Regional.
Police charged a 16-year-old player with breach of peace after finding he struck four others with a belt in the locker room on Aug. 25 after another player turned off the lights.
Talty says the school's investigation determined the coach left the players unsupervised. She said Eckert fully cooperated with the investigation. He has not publicly commented.
Parents reported the incident to Cromwell police. Other parents and players have spoken out in support of Eckert.
The state Department of Children and Families also is investigating.
