HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — The United States overpowered Australia 25-23, 25-12, 25-15 on Tuesday, the opening day of the men's volleyball World Cup.
Matt Anderson led with 17 points and the Americans recorded 10 aces, including three by Aaron Russell.
In other matches, Dmitriy Ilinykh and Maxim Mikhaylov each scored 12 points to lead defending champion Russia to a 29-27, 25-16, 25-15 win over Venezuela, while Italy beat Canada 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-13.
Argentina rallied from a set down to post a hard-fought 25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 26-24 win over Iran, and world champion Poland eased past Tunisia 25-17, 25-15, 25-20.
Host Japan outlasted Egypt 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 17-25, 15-7.
Two berths for the 2016 Rio Olympic games are on offer in the 12-nation tournament that runs to Sept. 23.
