PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A former Rhode Island high school athletic director says he was fired for expressing concerns that its fundraising practices were creating unequal opportunities for female and minority athletes.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1JOU0hQ ) Christopher Tashjian, of West Warwick, was fired from Cumberland High School in June. Now he's seeking unspecified damages in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.
The suit claims the town, its treasurer, and the school superintendent wrongfully terminated him when he expressed concerns that the school system violated federal law. He says the school supported the boys' hockey team financially but made the girls' hockey team raise money to fund the team. He says the girls' team was eliminated despite efforts from parents to raise money.
The town and superintendent denied the allegations.
