ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan says it will spend $100 million over five years to create opportunities for students and staff interested in data science.
President Mark Schlissel says "big data" can provide "dramatic insights" into a range of sciences, from medicine to economics to social behavior. The university's chief academic officer, Provost Martha Pollack, calls it a critical approach to scientific discovery, along with experiments, modeling and computation.
The university plans to hire 35 faculty members and expand research computing, among other steps.
Researchers already are collecting data from 3,000 cars, trucks and buses in Ann Arbor to test connected vehicles.
Officials plan to talk more about the Data Science Initiative at a campus forum on Oct. 6 at the Rackham Building. It will be open to the public.
